See below for ways to get involved, including replacing my awful 4Feet drawing
The idea of washing another person’s feet has always been abhorrent to me. The idea of having my own feet washed just a little less abhorrent (mostly because I’m not the one doing the touching of feet).
So you can imagine my own surprise to tell that we are planning to wash the feet of some homeless men and women on Saturday, June 21. By some, I mean whomever comes – be it one person or one hundred.
Who in their right mind washes another person’s feet, particularly a homeless person’s?
Certainly not me?!
I am pleased to tell you that most of our group is naturally more open and excited about this adventure than me. Although I am excited now, it’s only because feet have been a clear theme lately, and many pieces are coming together to make June 21 a pretty cool day.
For one, a group of businessmen offered to provide lunch – and this they offered before they had any idea we were planning to wash feet on June 21.
Second, random other people who did not know we were planning to wash feet have recently contacted me with this very idea of feet washing.
So multiple ideas and people seem to be converging on this day.
What’s it to you?
Well, you are invited to join us!
Those of us planning to wash feet on June 21 are a bunch of people who don’t know what we’re doing! What do I mean? Even though we’re putting a lot of thought into how the day will look and run, we are novices at feet washing. Simply put, we are not qualified for this job; we are simply going to go and serve.
Do you want to come?
There are multiple roles people can play – from set up, to passing out food at lunch, to standing around during the foot washing time to be available to talk to those that come. Of course, if you want to wash feet, there’s opportunity to do so.
Or, are you creative? Do you hate my 4Feet drawing and want to design a cool 4Feet "logo" for us (see more info on the name 4Feet below)? Are you musical? Do you want to come play or sing while we wash feet? Do you pray? You can stay home (or come down) and pray for us. Do you have another idea we haven't thought of? COME ON!
Furthermore, you can come for just 30 minutes, or you can stay the whole time. Basically, if you want to come just because you’re curious and want to observe, there’s room for you. If you want to jump in and be a part but only have an hour, there’s room for you! If you want to help provide supplies needed, see a list below and let us know what you’d like to contribute!

Finally, we’re calling it 4Feet. The idea behind 4Feet is this: There are two feet being washed and two feet doing the washing. Although the non-homeless are washing the feet of the homeless, we all have feet that get dirty, and we all need them cleaned. Even as we serve those that are homeless by washing their feet, they serve us by opening themselves up to such an intimate, personal experience. We are all in this together! Come join us!
